96 I cannot reconcile myself to recent religious interpretations of the Sonata. Surely any religious view of the work must stand or fall by assessment of the so-called ‘Cross motif ’. If its use in the amorous B major tune of the E flat major Concerto, or the grotesquely exuberant march from the same work with its cymbal crash, marks these themes as religious, then all music might well be called religious, in the manner in which all art was deemed political not too long ago.

The Grandioso theme of the Sonata is, to me, ruled out as a theme of religious character by the imperious gesture of its ending, which suggests, to a psychologically inclined listener, megalomania rather than omnipotence.
